In 1994, a group of interested residents began to discuss the
need for a unique kind of school for the Huntington area. They envisioned
a place where learning was grounded in the Scriptures, where Christian
virtues would be modeled and taught, and where students would be
challenged academically. A commitment was made to establish such
a school.
The founding board, prompted by the article “The Lost Tools
of Learning” by Dorothy Sayers, began to examine school models
with a classical and Christ-centered approach to learning. After
visiting Logos School in Moscow, Idaho, attending the second annual
conference of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools
(ACCS), and evaluating the performance of students in such classically-oriented
schools, the founding board decided to adopt the classical and Christian
approach.
In August of 1995, after fifteen months of intensive praying and
extensive planning by its founders, Covenant School opened its doors
to thirty-three students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Facilities
were leased from River Cities Community Church, and staff consisted
of four full-time teachers, two part-time teachers, and Mr. Don
Post as administrator. Within a few years rapid growth necessitated
a temporary move of the sixth through eighth grades to the facilities
of First Church of the Nazarene.
In 1999, Covenant School purchased its first home-of-its-own, a
23,000 sq-ft. facility to accommodate both present needs and anticipated
growth. Since 2002, Covenant School has graduated fifteen seniors.
As Covenant begins its thirteenth year, the Lord’s blessing has
brought approximately 188 students to our grades K-12. The board
is committed to seeing a full K-12th program take shape, believing
that parents should have a biblically-based day school education
available to assist them in bringing up their children in the nurture
and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians
6:4).
